Anime (アニメ?, an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of “animation”, pronounced [anime] ( listen) in Japanese, but typically Anime-en-US-pronunciation.ogg /ˈænəˌmeɪ/ (help·info) or /ˈænəˌmə/ in English) is animation originating in Japan. The world outside Japan regards anime as “Japanese animation”.[1] Anime originated about 1917.[2]

While the earliest known Japanese animation dates from 1917,[2] and many original Japanese cartoons were produced in the ensuing decades, the characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s – notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka – and became known outside Japan in the 1980s.

Anime, like manga, has a large audience in Japan and high recognition throughout the world.[citation needed] Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online.

Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist. It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction. Anime gained early[when?] popularity in East and Southeast Asia and has garnered more-recent popularity in the Western World.[citation needed]

  1. Nice post, I just wanted to clear a few things up:
Anime actually began in 1915 with a film titled Imokawa Mukuzo Kenkanban no Naki (English: The Story of the Concierge Mukuzo Imokawa) created by Oten Shimikawa. Additionally, Anime did not begin growing in popularity on a certain date, but gradually over time. However, some of the most popular anime shows to be released in America, such as Pokemon!, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon, were all released in the 1990s and early 2000s. Before that there were many films that had attained international fame though, such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Akira.

    Hope this helps some!

  2. Please visit my wordpress page where I will be regularly posting things to do with the original anime screenplay that I have been working on for some time. Feedback in any form will be much appreciated but flaming will not be tolerated. Cheers

  3. Anime is definetly one of the greatest things the japanese have given to the world. Can’t get enough of shows like Death note, DBZ, bleach, Code Geass, Elfen Lied and even less known anime such as Monster by Naoki Urasawa.
